New York Official Pleads Guilty in Internet Sex Sting

Chris Ortloff resigned from the parole board after his Oct. 13 arrest in a state police sting at a motel in suburban Albany. A 61-year-old Republican from Plattsburgh, Ortloff represented the North Country's 110th Assembly District from 1986 until 2006.

Federal prosecutors said he could face 10 years in prison at sentencing April 23.

Ortloff admitted that he repeatedly e-mailed and called someone he believed was the mother of 11-and 12-year-old sisters to arrange a meeting with them to have sex, prosecutors said. He brought video equipment and intended to record it.

There were no actual minors involved in the undercover operation, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Spina. However, court documents show Ortloff told the investigator posing as the girls' mother that he had sex in the past with other minors who lived near him.

Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew Baxter said Wednesday he did not know if the subsequent investigation turned up real victims, though his office normally takes such statements seriously and investigates.

Washington Governor Declares Statewide Emergency

Gov. Chris Gregoire declared a winter storm emergency Wednesday as many Western Washington residents hoped for a traditional rainy Christmas after a week of heavy snow, jammed airports, closed roads and cabin fever.

"A number of counties and cities are struggling to meet the problems posed by this month's onslaught of snow and winter weather," Gregoire wrote. "Snowfall has reached record or near-record level in 30 of the state's 39 counties."

Her proclamation directed state agencies to support local emergency responses, freeing funds and activating the National Guard, the Washington State Guard and State Emergency Operations Center at Camp Murray, by Fort Lewis.

States of emergency were previously declared locally in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Thurston counties, the municipalities of Spokane, Spokane Valley and Gig Harbor and the Makah Indian Tribe.

Gregoire also issued a 10-day temporary waiver of rules that limit the number of hours that a truck driver can haul bulk milk from farms to dairies, a move intended to avoid losses of nearly $1 million a day if milk failed to reach dairies within the time limits set by health regulations.

Temperatures rose and light rain was falling across the western part of the state Wednesday, melting some of the ice on streets and roads, but the National Weather Service forecast one more round of snow Christmas morning. Starting Friday, highs were forecast to reach the low 40s in most areas west of the Cascade Range.

Obamas keep low profile on Christmas in Hawaii

KAILUA, Hawaii (AP) — President-elect Barack Obama spent a private Christmas Day with family and close friends, continuing a vacation that has been remarkable for how low-key he and aides have kept it.

Obama, wife Michelle and their two young daughters opened presents at their rented vacation home and planned a dinner of turkey and ham, according to aides. He planned no public events, and aides said they did not expect to release any further details.

The Obamas arrived in Honolulu on Saturday with four aides, his Secret Service detail and a small group of journalists. Since then, he has been largely sequestered at the beachfront estate.

With less a month before Obama takes office on Jan. 20, he is taking every step possible to make sure this holiday is as private as possible — something he bemoaned while walking to a driving range last Sunday.

"OK, guys," Obama said, recognizing the photographers snapping pictures. "Come on. ... How many shots do you need?"

It was one of only a handful of trips Obama and his motorcade have taken. He and Michelle Obama have visited Marine Corps Base Hawaii for daily morning workouts. Twice, he and friends have played a round of golf. He attended a private memorial service for his grandmother on Tuesday and scattered her ashes into the Pacific Ocean.
